Side Effects: An App That Shows the Pros & Cons of Tech.
Can users still choose not to be tracked, or does modern technology make that choice unrealistic?
Overview
In a technology ecosystem built for rapid adoption, Side Effects reshapes how people assess digital products and systems by surfacing both benefits and trade-offs. Through verified insights and real-world perspectives, it helps users understand risk and impact so technology adoption feels informed and intentional.
Problem:
People adopt products and platforms faster than they can understand their consequences, while benefits are emphasized and trade-offs remain obscured. Without transparent, trustworthy insight into risks and real-world impact, users are pushed into decisions they cannot fully evaluate undermining trust and personal agency.

Process
To ground the project in real behavior, we conducted focused group sessions using speculative scenario cards that exaggerated familiar technologies and future possibilities. These discussions surfaced moments of hesitation, discomfort, and acceptance, revealing how people often adopt products without fully understanding their consequences shaping how we framed transparency, risk, and decision-making in the platform.
Decision threshold Mapping:
Instead of mapping a traditional user journey, we mapped decision thresholds moments where users pause, hesitate, or opt out. This helped identify where perceived value no longer outweighed risk, and where trust began to break. These thresholds became key inputs for structuring how information should be presented in Side Effects.

Risk–Trust Mapping Structure:
We structured the perceptual map to surface how trust shifts as perceived risk increases, clustering technologies by reversibility, governance clarity, and personal impact. Rather than ranking right or wrong choices, the map highlights where uncertainty concentrates guiding where users need context, comparison, and safeguards before adoption.

Key Insights.
Insight 1:
Users engage more when risk information feels calm and structured rather than alarming or fear-driven.
Users trust platforms more when real, verified user experiences are visible alongside expert validation.
Insight 2:
Users want guidance that helps them decide confidently, not messaging that makes them feel scared or judged.
Insight 3:
Users are willing to share data when the value exchange is transparent and clearly understood.
Insight 4:
Opportunity
How might we help people evaluate technologies by making risks, trade-offs, and consequences visible before adoption becomes irreversible?
Solution:
A decision-support platform that helps people evaluate emerging technologies by making risks, trade-offs, and consequences visible alongside benefits. Designed to support informed judgment, it aggregates real-world outcomes, expert perspectives, and comparative signals allowing users to understand impact, assess alternatives, and adopt technology with clarity and control.

Tech Community Experience
A simple and intuitive mobile platform that helps users explore insights, connect through conversations, and share knowledge within trusted tech communities.

result.
Side Effects became a dynamic platform where users can discover the truth of tech—both benefits and side effects. Through real-time news, product dashboards, verified expert and user voices, and interactive community spaces, the platform transforms scattered information into an accessible, social, and trustworthy feed.
With traffic-light warnings, clear visuals, and alternative recommendations, Side Effects empowers users to see both sides of technology and make informed choices.
